The flat battery on a cold morning
You turn the key and hear only a click. A flat battery is one of the most common vehicle problems. Knowing how to jump-start safely can help you get moving again while avoiding damage to vehicles and injury to people.
Check before connecting
Confirm that both vehicles use compatible electrical systems and that neither battery is visibly damaged or leaking. Park the vehicles safely, switch off electrical accessories and apply the parking brakes before handling cables.
Follow the correct sequence
Connect the positive terminal of the flat battery to the positive terminal of the donor battery. Then connect the negative lead according to the vehicle manufacturer's instructions, often using a designated earth point. Incorrect connections can damage electrical systems.
Disconnect carefully
Once the vehicle starts, disconnect the cables in the reverse order. Keep cables away from moving engine parts and fans. If the vehicle repeatedly needs jump-starting, arrange a battery and charging-system check rather than relying on repeated boosts.
