Avoiding burnout in mission-driven work

Why people who care most are most at risk — and what helps.

Sustainability is part of the mission

People who deeply care burn out faster. Five protective practices:

1. SET HOURS even when unpaid. Sundays off, evenings sacred. 2. ROTATE intense roles every 12–18 months. 3. PEER SUPERVISION (informal monthly call with a counterpart from another organisation). 4. THE 'CALENDAR-NO' — say no to ideas that don't fit the strategy without negotiation. 5. CELEBRATE wins formally — most NGOs default to next-problem mode.

The European Social Network publishes a free guide 'Caring for Carers' specifically for community workers.
