Avoiding stereotypes in community reporting

How not to write the same tired story about your neighbourhood.

Specificity is the antidote

Stereotype = a single story repeated. To avoid it, REACH FOR SPECIFICITY: names, ages, exact quotes, particular details. 'The elderly residents' becomes 'Halina, 72, who has lived on Wrzosowa Street since 1968'.

Avoid 'voiceless' (everyone has a voice — they just may not have a microphone). Avoid 'inspiring' for disabled people doing ordinary things. Avoid 'community leader' if no community elected them. And ALWAYS pass the test: would the person I'm writing about be proud to read this sentence aloud?
