Your holiday begins at the rental desk
You have landed in Italy, collected your luggage and arrived at the car rental desk. Before you focus on maps, beaches or vineyards, take a few minutes to ensure you can legally and safely drive. Most problems visitors face begin before they even leave the airport.
Check your documents
Carry your driving licence, passport or ID, rental agreement and insurance information. Depending on your country, you may also need an International Driving Permit. Never assume the rental company has checked everything. If police stop you, you are responsible for producing the correct documents.
Inspect the vehicle carefully
Walk around the vehicle before leaving. Photograph any scratches, dents or damaged wheels. Check lights, mirrors, fuel type and tyre condition. Taking two minutes now can prevent a difficult conversation when returning the vehicle.
Understand what you are driving
Many rental cars in Italy are smaller than visitors expect. Before moving off, learn how to operate the headlights, indicators, windscreen wipers, parking brake and reverse gear. If the car is manual and you normally drive an automatic, spend extra time becoming comfortable before entering traffic.
Plan the first hour
The first hour is often the most stressful. Set your navigation system before driving away. Review your route and identify major roads or towns along the way. Avoid trying to programme a device while driving. Confidence comes from preparation, not from reacting at the last minute.
A successful Italian road trip starts before the engine starts. Check the documents, inspect the vehicle and know your route.
