Boundaries for community volunteers

Why a healthy 'no' is part of the role.

Give from a full cup

Volunteers who say yes to everything burn out — and leave. Healthy boundaries serve everyone:

• AGREED HOURS and roles at the start. • A 'PERSONAL CONTACT POLICY' — community work doesn't require giving your private mobile number to every service user. • PERMISSION TO ESCALATE — if something is outside your role, refer up to staff. • PERMISSION TO PAUSE — taking a month off is normal. • END-OF-SHIFT RITUAL — a walk home, a tea, a phone call. Help the brain switch off.
