Why tyre pressure matters

You are preparing for a weekend trip when you notice one tyre looks slightly low. Driving with incorrect tyre pressure affects braking, handling, tyre life and fuel consumption. A simple two-minute check can improve safety and reduce costs.

Find the correct pressure

Every vehicle has recommended tyre pressures. Look inside the driver's door frame, fuel filler flap or vehicle handbook. The correct pressure depends on the vehicle and sometimes the load being carried, so never rely on a friend's recommendation.

Check tyres when cold

Tyres heat up while driving and the pressure increases slightly. For the most accurate reading, check them before a journey or after the vehicle has been parked for several hours. Remove the valve cap, attach the gauge firmly and read the result.

Adjust and recheck

Add or release air until the tyre matches the recommended pressure. Replace the valve cap and repeat for all tyres, including the spare if fitted. Make tyre pressure checks part of your monthly vehicle routine.
