Being seen is part of driving safely
You reverse into a parking space and a friend says one brake light is not working. A failed light can make your intentions unclear to other road users. A monthly light check helps you spot faults before they create risk.
Check the front and rear lights
Switch on sidelights, dipped headlights, main beam and rear lights. Walk around the vehicle and check that each lamp is working and not cracked, loose or badly clouded. In a shared car park, avoid shining main beam directly into nearby windows or people.
Test signals and brake lights
Use indicators, hazard lights and rear fog lights where fitted. For brake lights, ask another person to stand safely behind the car, or use a reflection in a shop window or garage door. Check that both side brake lights and any high-mounted brake light respond together.
Act on faults promptly
If a light has failed, replace the bulb only if your vehicle allows safe access and you are confident doing it. Some modern vehicles use sealed units or require careful removal of trim. If in doubt, ask a garage or parts shop for help rather than damaging the fitting.
