Moving beyond the take-make-dispose model

Many businesses operate using a linear model: resources are purchased, used and eventually discarded. The circular economy takes a different approach. It focuses on keeping products, materials and resources in use for as long as possible through reuse, repair, refurbishment and recycling. This can reduce costs while improving resilience.

Identify avoidable waste

Begin by examining what leaves your business as waste. Packaging, surplus materials, damaged products and obsolete equipment may all represent lost value. Understanding where waste occurs helps identify opportunities to recover resources and reduce purchasing requirements.

Extend product life

Many items can remain useful for longer through maintenance, repair or refurbishment. Extending the life of equipment, furniture and technology often costs less than replacement while reducing environmental impacts. Consider whether products can be repaired before automatically purchasing new ones.

Look for reuse opportunities

Materials that are no longer useful to your business may still have value elsewhere. Reusable packaging, surplus stock and redundant equipment can sometimes be donated, sold or exchanged. Circular thinking encourages businesses to see resources rather than waste.

Start with one practical change

You do not need a complete business transformation to benefit from circular economy principles. Choose one area where materials can be reused, repaired or recovered. Small successes often reveal additional opportunities and build confidence for future improvements.
