Co-operatives 101

The seven International Co-operative Alliance principles every member should know.

Open, democratic, equitable

1. Voluntary and open membership. 2. Democratic member control (one member, one vote). 3. Member economic participation. 4. Autonomy and independence. 5. Education, training and information. 6. Co-operation among co-operatives. 7. Concern for community.

Adopted by the ICA in 1995, these guide co-operatives from Mondragón to Migros to community wind farms. In the EU, co-operatives employ over 4.7 million people across 250,000 enterprises.
