Community-led repair cafés

How a pop-up repair event can build trust and divert tonnes of waste.

Bring your broken thing, leave with it working

A repair café is a free, regular event where volunteer fixers help neighbours mend small appliances, clothes, bikes, jewellery, and electronics. It started in Amsterdam in 2009 — now over 2,500 exist across Europe.

Minimum kit: tables, power, a kettle, a few tool sets, ONE qualified electrician for anything mains-powered, and a sign-in sheet. Run it for 3 hours on a Saturday. Insurance is usually covered by your local authority or by joining the Repair Café Foundation (one-off €49 fee covers an entire host group).

Typical outcome: 60–70% of items fixed on the day.
