Exposure Basics for Digital Photography

Learn how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together to create a correctly exposed photograph.

Understanding exposure

Exposure is the amount of light that reaches the camera sensor while a photograph is being taken. Too much light produces an image that appears too bright, while too little light results in a photograph that is too dark. Good exposure records detail in both bright and darker areas wherever possible.
