Preparation reduces panic

Most journeys end without incident, but every driver should know what to do if something goes wrong. A calm response protects both safety and legal interests.

Make safety the first priority

If possible, move to a safe location away from traffic. Check whether anyone is injured and contact emergency services when required. Personal safety is always more important than vehicle damage.

Document the situation

Take photographs of vehicle positions, damage and relevant road conditions. Exchange details with other parties where appropriate and record the location accurately.

Contact the rental company

Rental companies have specific procedures for accidents and breakdowns. Contact them as soon as practical and follow their instructions regarding repairs, recovery or replacement vehicles.

Stay calm and cooperative

Arguments rarely help after an incident. Remain polite, provide factual information and avoid admitting fault at the scene. Allow insurers and authorities to determine responsibility.

The best emergency response is calm, safe and well documented.
