Image rights: when can you re-share?

Five rules that keep your community newsletter out of trouble.

Who took it? Who's in it?

Two separate questions matter when re-using a photo: the PHOTOGRAPHER's copyright and the SUBJECT's image rights.

• Photographer: did they upload it under Creative Commons (CC)? CC-BY is free with credit. CC-BY-NC is free for non-commercial use. All Rights Reserved means ask first. • Subject: even with copyright cleared, you usually need a person's consent to re-publish their face in a new context — especially children, vulnerable people, or sensitive settings.

When in doubt, ask.
