Interviewing a neighbour with respect

Five rules that make community interviews feel safe and produce better answers.

Listening louder than asking

1. ASK FIRST whether you can record — and offer an unrecorded option. Some people open up only off-mic. 2. START WITH OPEN questions: 'Tell me about…' rather than 'Do you think…'. 3. PAUSE after every answer. Silence invites the deeper sentence. 4. NEVER finish their sentences. 5. SEND the quotes back before publishing. A two-line correction now saves a relationship later.
