Local seed swaps and food sovereignty

Why saving and sharing seeds matters more than ever in Europe.

Genetic diversity in your hand

Since 1900, an estimated 75% of crop varieties cultivated by farmers have been lost. EU seed regulations were updated in 2023 to make it easier for community groups and small farmers to exchange traditional seeds within networks.

A SEED SWAP is a simple event: bring seeds you saved, take seeds others saved. Label clearly: species, variety, year saved. Keep paper records. Build relationships with regional networks like Réseau Semences Paysannes (FR), Rete Semi Rurali (IT), Pro Specie Rara (CH), or the European Seed Network. The goal: keep local agro-biodiversity alive.
