You cannot improve what you do not measure
Many businesses want to become more sustainable but are unsure where to start. Measuring energy, water and waste provides a practical baseline. You do not need specialist software or consultants. A few utility bills, invoices and observations can reveal where resources are being used and where savings may be possible.
Understanding energy use
Review at least six months of electricity, gas or heating bills. Look for seasonal patterns and unusually high consumption periods. Consider which equipment uses the most energy and whether operating hours match actual business needs. Even simple observations can highlight opportunities to reduce consumption without affecting service quality.
Checking water consumption
Water costs are often overlooked because they appear relatively small compared with energy costs. However, leaks, inefficient fixtures and unnecessary usage can add up over time. Compare recent water bills and consider where water is used throughout your operations. Kitchens, washrooms and cleaning processes are common areas to examine.
Measuring waste generation
Review waste collection invoices and observe what is being thrown away. Separate waste into categories such as general waste, recyclables and food waste where relevant. Many businesses discover that materials they pay to dispose of could be reduced, reused or recycled more effectively.
Creating a simple baseline
Record key figures in a spreadsheet or notebook. Note monthly energy consumption, water use and waste costs. Do not worry about perfection. The purpose is to establish a starting point that allows you to track progress and identify trends over time.
