The fastest way across Italy
Italian motorways, known as autostrade, connect major cities and regions. They are generally well maintained and efficient, making them the preferred option for longer journeys.
Understand the toll system
Most autostrade require payment. At many entry points you take a ticket and pay when exiting. Keep the ticket safe because it determines the distance travelled and the toll due.
Choose the correct lane
Toll plazas often have different lanes for cash, cards and electronic payment systems. Signs above each lane indicate which method is accepted. Choosing the wrong lane can cause delays and confusion.
Take regular breaks
Service areas provide fuel, food, toilets and rest facilities. Long-distance driving is tiring, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. A short break every couple of hours improves concentration and safety.
Know what to do in an emergency
If your vehicle develops a problem, move safely away from traffic if possible. Follow motorway procedures, use emergency facilities where available and contact the rental company or roadside assistance provider.
Motorway driving becomes straightforward when you understand the toll system, choose the correct lanes and plan regular rest stops.
