Parking is not the same everywhere
Parking rules vary across Italy, but most towns use colour-coded systems to indicate where you may park. Understanding these colours can save both money and frustration.
Know the colours
Blue lines usually indicate paid parking. White lines often indicate free parking where permitted. Yellow markings are generally reserved for specific authorised users such as disabled permit holders or service vehicles.
Always check nearby signs
The road markings alone may not tell the full story. Time limits, local restrictions and payment requirements are normally displayed on nearby signs. Read them before leaving your vehicle.
Use official payment methods
Many towns use ticket machines, parking meters or mobile payment apps. Ensure payment is correctly completed and keep any receipt or confirmation until you return.
When in doubt, choose certainty
A secure paid car park often costs less than a parking fine. If you are uncertain about local restrictions, using an official car park is usually the simplest solution.
The safest parking decision is the one you fully understand before walking away from the vehicle.
