Plastic-free shopping habits

Five small swaps a household can make this week.

Refill, reuse, refuse

1. CARRY a cotton or string bag — a stuffed one weighs almost nothing. 2. CHOOSE loose fruit and veg from the market over plastic-wrapped supermarket equivalents. 3. REFILL where you can — a growing number of EU cities have 'unverpackt' / 'sans emballage' / 'a granel' shops for grains, oils, soaps. 4. SWITCH to a metal water bottle and refill at public fountains — many EU cities (Paris, Rome, Berlin) publish free fountain maps. 5. REFUSE single-use cutlery when ordering takeaway.
