Public service broadcasting in Europe

Why your nation has a publicly-funded broadcaster — and what that means for you.

More than a TV channel

Every EU country has a Public Service Broadcaster (PSB): BBC (UK), ARD/ZDF (DE), France Télévisions (FR), RAI (IT), RTVE (ES), VRT/RTBF (BE), ERR (EE), and so on. Funded by licence fees or general taxation, their REMIT is set by law: inform, educate, entertain, and represent the country's diversity.

For community media this matters because PSBs have FREE archives, open commissioning calls for independent producers, and statutory obligations on accessibility and regional language broadcasting. Look up your country's 'public value test' — it's how you can hold them to account.
