When the menu feels overwhelming
You walk into a café while travelling and see a menu filled with unfamiliar coffee names. Espresso, americano, cappuccino, flat white and filter coffee all appear, but you are unsure which one to choose. Understanding a few key differences can make ordering much easier and more enjoyable.
Espresso is the foundation
Many coffee drinks begin with espresso. An espresso is a small, concentrated coffee served in a small cup. Its strong flavour comes from the brewing method rather than simply containing more caffeine. Understanding espresso helps you understand many other drinks on the menu.
Milk changes the experience
A cappuccino combines espresso with steamed milk and milk foam. A flat white also contains espresso and milk but usually has a smoother texture and less foam. The amount of milk changes both the flavour and the strength of the coffee experience.
Longer drinks and filter coffee
An americano is made by adding hot water to espresso, creating a larger drink with a milder taste. Filter coffee is brewed differently and often highlights flavour characteristics more clearly. Neither is better than the other; they simply offer different experiences.
The best coffee choice is the one that matches your taste preferences, the occasion and the experience you want from the café.
