Reading an electricity bill

Unlocking the small print so low-income households can claim every reduction.

Two numbers matter most

On any EU electricity bill, two figures matter:

• kWh USED — your actual consumption in the period. • PRICE PER kWh — the rate you pay, separated from the fixed 'standing charge'.

Many member states offer SOCIAL TARIFFS for low-income households — discounts of 25–60% on the consumption rate. They are not automatic. You have to apply through your national energy regulator or municipal social services. Bring proof of income and your latest bill. Check the box on the supplier's annual letter that asks 'Are you eligible for a vulnerable-customer programme?'.
