Build the home language first
Research is overwhelming: children whose home language is rich and well-supported acquire the school language FASTER and more deeply. Don't switch entirely to the school language at home — you'll just impoverish both.
For parents working in a new country:
• KEEP reading bedtime stories in your mother tongue. • BORROW books in your home language from the library — most EU public libraries hold multilingual children's sections. • TALK with your child about ideas, not just instructions. Vocabulary in any language predicts academic success across all subjects.
