Recognising prior learning

How an adult's life experience can count as formal qualifications.

What you can do already, you shouldn't relearn

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) — sometimes called VAE (FR), RVA (DE), RNFIL — is a process where adults document skills gained through work, volunteering, or life and convert them into recognised credit toward a qualification.

For refugees, returners-to-work, and informally-trained workers, RPL is a game changer. It is anchored in the European Qualifications Framework (EQF) so credits move across borders.

Process varies by country but typically: portfolio of evidence → assessor interview → certificate. Adult education centres and trade unions often offer free guidance.
