When the screen will not clear

You are driving in light rain and the windscreen smears instead of clearing. Worn wiper blades reduce visibility and make night driving more tiring. Replacing them is one of the simplest maintenance jobs you can learn.

Spot the signs of wear

Look for streaking, squeaking, skipping, split rubber or areas the blade misses. Lift the wiper arm gently and inspect the rubber edge. If the rubber is cracked, loose or hardened, replacement is usually better than cleaning.

Choose the right blade

Check the vehicle handbook, the blade packaging guide or a trusted parts database for the correct length and connector type. Front blades may be different sizes, and the rear blade may use a separate fitting. Avoid forcing a blade that does not match the connector.

Fit and test safely

Lift the wiper arm carefully, release the old blade, and attach the new blade until it clicks securely. Lower the arm gently onto the glass rather than letting it snap back. Test with washer fluid before driving, so you know the blade is secure and clearing properly.
