The goal is discovery, not information gathering

Many new celebrants treat the first meeting like a questionnaire. They collect dates, locations and timelines but miss the emotions that make a ceremony memorable. Your aim is not to gather facts. Your aim is to understand who the couple are and what matters most in their relationship.

Begin by creating a relaxed conversation

Start with simple questions about the wedding plans and how the couple are feeling about the day. This helps them relax before discussing personal experiences. People share better stories when they feel they are having a conversation rather than being interviewed.

Ask open questions

Questions that begin with 'what', 'how' and 'when' usually produce richer answers. Try asking: 'What do you admire most about each other?', 'How did your relationship change over time?', and 'When did you know this was the person you wanted to marry?' These questions reveal values and emotions rather than simple facts.

Listen for stories, not answers

When a couple mentions an interesting moment, explore it further. Ask follow-up questions such as 'What happened next?' or 'Why was that important to you?' Often the best ceremony material appears when people move beyond prepared answers and begin telling real stories.

Finish with clear next steps

Before ending the meeting, summarise the stories and themes you heard. Confirm what information you still need, explain when the first draft will be ready and agree how feedback will be provided. A professional ending builds trust and prevents misunderstandings later.

A successful discovery meeting leaves the couple feeling heard and gives you enough meaningful material to begin writing with confidence.
