Sharing tools instead of buying

How a tool library cuts both household costs and embodied carbon.

Use, don't own

A power drill is used on average for 13 minutes in its entire lifetime, yet most households own one. A tool library — a small community space lending out drills, saws, sanders, lawnmowers and more — turns ownership into access.

There are over 100 tool libraries across Europe. They typically charge a tiny annual membership (€10–30) or are free. Members borrow a tool for 7–14 days. Carbon savings: a single shared drill displaces the manufacture of 20–30 drills over its life.

No tool library near you? Start one with the local makerspace or community centre — Tool Library International publishes a free starter kit.
