Reporting does not have to be complicated

Many small businesses assume sustainability reporting is only for large corporations. In reality, a simple report can help communicate progress to customers, employees, suppliers and other stakeholders. The goal is to provide useful information rather than produce a lengthy technical document.

Focus on what matters

Select a small number of indicators that are relevant to your business. Examples include energy use, waste reduction, recycling rates, employee engagement or sustainability projects completed. Reporting a few meaningful measures is often more effective than collecting large amounts of data with little value.

Explain actions and outcomes

Good sustainability reports describe both what was done and what changed as a result. For example, rather than simply stating that LED lighting was installed, explain how it affected energy consumption or operating costs. Outcomes provide useful context for readers.

Be balanced and transparent

A credible report acknowledges areas where improvement is still needed. Sustainability reporting should present an honest picture rather than a perfect one. Transparency builds trust and demonstrates a commitment to continuous improvement.

Use reporting to support future decisions

Reporting is not just about communicating with others. It can also help identify trends, evaluate initiatives and support future planning. Over time, regular reporting provides a valuable record of progress and helps businesses focus resources where they can achieve the greatest benefit.
