The road may feel different
Many visitors are surprised by how dynamic Italian traffic can seem. Drivers may appear more assertive than in some countries, especially in busy cities. The key is not to copy local behaviour but to understand it and respond safely.
Expect close attention from other drivers
Italian drivers are often highly aware of the vehicles around them. This can lead to quicker decisions, tighter gaps and more frequent lane changes. Maintain a safe distance and avoid reacting emotionally if another driver appears impatient.
Use lanes confidently
Hesitation can create confusion. If you need to change lanes, signal clearly and make a positive, predictable move when it is safe. Sudden braking or indecision often creates more risk than a well-signalled manoeuvre.
Do not take horns personally
In some situations, drivers may use the horn simply to attract attention or communicate their presence. While unnecessary horn use should be avoided, hearing a horn does not automatically mean someone is angry. Stay focused on the road rather than on the emotion behind the sound.
Defensive driving wins every time
Assume that other road users may do something unexpected. Watch motorcycles carefully, check mirrors frequently and leave yourself enough space to react. You do not need to drive like a local to drive safely in Italy.
Confidence comes from staying predictable, patient and alert, regardless of how busy the road becomes.
