Trauma-aware classroom basics

Five principles that help adult learners who carry trauma.

Safety, choice, voice

Many adult learners — and many children — have experienced trauma: war, displacement, abuse, domestic violence, racism, loss. Trauma-aware practice doesn't require diagnosis:

1. SAFETY — predictable routines, named breaks, exit always allowed. 2. CHOICE — give learners options (sit anywhere; speak or pass). 3. VOICE — invite, never insist on disclosure. Stories are theirs. 4. CONNECTION before content — a known face, a kind question. 5. SELF-CARE for the teacher — secondary trauma is real; talk to peers.

It isn't softer teaching. It's better teaching.
