Notes are not a ceremony

After a discovery meeting you may have several pages of notes. New celebrants often try to include everything they learned. Guests do not need every detail. They need a story that helps them understand the couple. Your job is to select, organise and shape the material.

Find the central theme

Review your notes and look for a recurring idea. Perhaps the couple value adventure, resilience, humour or kindness. A theme helps you decide what belongs in the ceremony and what can be left out. If a story does not support the theme, it probably does not need to be included.

Use a simple structure

A strong couple story often follows a simple pattern: how they met, what changed, what they learned about each other and why they are standing here today. This creates movement and keeps guests interested. Avoid jumping backwards and forwards through time.

Keep only meaningful details

Ask yourself whether a detail reveals something important about the couple. The fact that they met in a café may not matter. The fact that one waited two hours because the other missed a train may reveal patience and commitment. Keep details that reveal character.

Write for listening

Ceremonies are heard, not read. Use short sentences and natural language. If a sentence feels awkward when spoken aloud, rewrite it. Guests should feel they are hearing a story rather than listening to a report.

The best ceremony narratives are clear, focused and easy to follow. They help guests understand why this relationship matters.
