Beyond strong and weak
Many people describe coffee as either strong or weak, but flavour is much more complex. Coffee professionals often discuss sweetness, acidity, body and aroma. Learning these terms helps you better understand your own preferences and communicate them clearly.
What acidity really means
In coffee, acidity does not mean the drink is unpleasant or sour. Instead, it often refers to brightness and liveliness. Coffees with fruity or citrus-like characteristics are often described as having higher acidity. Many specialty coffees celebrate this quality.
Body and mouthfeel
Body describes how the coffee feels in your mouth. Some coffees feel light and delicate, while others feel rich and heavy. A coffee can have a full body without being bitter and can have a light body while still offering complex flavours.
Finding your preferences
There is no single definition of the perfect coffee. Some people enjoy bright, fruity flavours while others prefer chocolate-like or nutty characteristics. The goal is not to judge coffee but to recognise what you enjoy and why you enjoy it.
Understanding flavour allows you to move beyond 'I like it' and begin describing what makes a coffee enjoyable for you.
