The light that appears on your commute
You are driving to work when a warning light appears on the dashboard. Many drivers panic or ignore it completely. A better approach is understanding which warnings require immediate action and which can be investigated safely later.
Know the colour system
Most vehicles use colours to indicate urgency. Red warnings often indicate a serious issue requiring immediate attention. Amber or yellow warnings usually mean a fault needs investigation soon. Green and blue lights generally show that a system is operating normally.
Respond safely
If a red warning appears, look for a safe place to stop and consult the vehicle handbook. Continuing to drive could cause damage or create a safety risk. Never attempt to read detailed information while the vehicle is moving.
Use the handbook as a tool
Modern vehicles display many symbols that vary between manufacturers. Keep a printed handbook in the vehicle or save a digital copy on your phone. Learning where to find information is often more useful than trying to memorise dozens of symbols.
