Understanding Italian road signs and markings

Italian roads can feel busy, but road signs provide most of the information you need. Visitors often receive fines not because they drive dangerously, but because they misunderstand a sign or road marking.

Triangular signs usually warn of hazards ahead. They may indicate sharp bends, steep gradients, pedestrian crossings or roadworks. When you see one, adjust your speed and prepare for changing conditions.

Circular signs often indicate restrictions or obligations. A red-bordered circle usually means a prohibition. Priority signs tell you who has the right of way. Never assume local drivers will stop simply because you expect them to.

Road markings are as important as roadside signs. Solid white lines generally mean you should not cross. Broken lines indicate where changing lanes may be permitted if safe. Pedestrian crossings deserve particular attention because people may step onto them unexpectedly.
