Universal Design for Learning

Three principles that make a lesson work for the widest range of learners.

Multiple means of engagement, representation, expression

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) asks teachers to plan for variety from the start, not as a retrofit:

• MULTIPLE MEANS OF ENGAGEMENT — give learners different ways to find the topic relevant. • MULTIPLE MEANS OF REPRESENTATION — present the content in text, image, audio, video. • MULTIPLE MEANS OF EXPRESSION — let learners show understanding in different ways (essay, presentation, poster, podcast).

It benefits disabled learners, second-language learners, neurodivergent learners — and frankly everyone else too.
