Voting in European Parliament elections

How and why to vote in the only EU-wide elections.

Every 5 years

European Parliament elections happen every five years (next: 2029). 720 MEPs are elected, allocated by country roughly in proportion to population. The Parliament has co-decision power on most EU laws and approves the Commission President.

Turnout in 2024 was 51% — the highest in 30 years, but still lower than national elections. Your vote is direct: you choose individuals or party lists, not 'an MEP for the EU'. Voting from abroad is allowed (member-state procedures vary). Check your registration well before election day.
