Whistleblower protection under EU law

Reporting wrongdoing at work is now protected across the bloc.

Directive 2019/1937

The EU Whistleblower Protection Directive (in force since 2021 in most member states) protects people who report violations of EU law at work. Key features:

• Internal channels REQUIRED in companies/public bodies with 50+ employees. • Anonymous reporting allowed in many member states. • Strong PROTECTION against retaliation (dismissal, demotion, harassment). • Right to compensation if retaliation occurs. • External reporting channels (national agencies) when internal ones don't work.

Know the channels in your country before you need them.
