Designing accessible community spaces

The five quick wins that make a venue usable by everyone.

Beyond the ramp

Accessibility is more than wheelchair access. Five low-cost upgrades that hugely widen inclusion:

1. CLEAR signage in plain language with pictograms. 2. A QUIET ROOM (or quiet corner with sensory items) for autistic visitors or anyone overwhelmed. 3. INDUCTION LOOP at the speaker's microphone for hearing-aid users. 4. STEP-FREE access AND a clear seating route for people who can walk but tire. 5. STAFF / VOLUNTEER awareness training (free 90-minute courses from most disability charities).

The European Accessibility Act (in force 2025) makes many of these obligations, not options, for services to the public.
