Recognising phishing

How to spot a fake 'urgent' message before clicking.

Urgency is the warning sign

Phishing emails and texts pretend to be from your bank, the tax office, your courier, or a tech company. They all share one trait: artificial urgency. 'Your account will close in 24 hours!' 'Confirm this delivery now!' Real institutions write more calmly.

Never click links in unexpected messages. Instead, type the company's address into your browser yourself, or use their app. If a 'tax office' email contains a payment link, it's almost certainly fake — tax offices don't email payment links.
