Asylum is a right
Under the 1951 Refugee Convention and the EU Common European Asylum System, anyone fleeing persecution has the right to:
• APPLY for asylum at any EU border or inside any member state. • REMAIN while their claim is processed (non-refoulement). • RECEIVE basic reception conditions: housing, food, medical care, education for children. • HAVE INTERPRETATION when needed. • APPEAL a negative decision.
Rules differ by country (e.g., right to work timing). Free legal aid exists in every member state — refer newcomers to your country's bar association's asylum scheme or to organisations like Caritas, JRS, Red Cross.
