Running an inclusive welcome event

How to design a community gathering where newcomers actually feel welcome.

Make the first 5 minutes count

Most newcomers decide if they belong within the first five minutes. Three design choices help:

1. NAMED GREETERS at the door — not officials, just two friendly residents who introduce arrivals to someone else within 60 seconds. 2. AN ACTIVITY for newcomers (e.g., a community map to add their street to). Doing something is less awkward than chatting. 3. NO LONG SPEECHES in the first hour. People who don't know anyone leave during long speeches.

Always offer non-alcoholic drinks prominently — many faith and recovery communities feel excluded otherwise.
