Spotting misinformation online

Three habits that catch most fake stories before you share them.

Pause, source, search

When a story makes you angry or excited, that's the moment to slow down. Three quick checks catch most disinformation:

1. PAUSE — strong emotion is the algorithm's friend, not yours. 2. SOURCE — is the outlet one you recognise? If not, search its name plus the word 'about'. 3. REVERSE-SEARCH the image — drag any photo into Google Images or TinEye. Recycled images are the single most common red flag.

The European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) maintains free fact-check feeds in every EU language — bookmark your country's one and use it.
