Speak to the person, not the interpreter
Eight tips:
1. BRIEF the interpreter beforehand on topic and terminology. 2. SHORT chunks (1–2 sentences) — long monologues are hard to interpret accurately. 3. ADDRESS the person directly ('How are you?'), not the interpreter ('Ask her how she is'). 4. PAUSE for interpretation — don't talk over. 5. AVOID idioms and jargon. 6. CHECK understanding through the person, not the interpreter. 7. RESPECT confidentiality — interpreters are bound to it too. 8. PAY them properly. Volunteer interpretation is a myth that excludes professionals.
