Controlling Manual Handling Risk

The preferred approach is to remove hazardous manual handling where possible, then reduce unavoidable risk through work design, equipment and suitable organisational controls.

Avoidance comes first. Work can sometimes be reorganised so the hazardous movement disappears, materials are stored where needed, or mechanical means perform the movement.
